How to Find a Job: Why Networking is the Best Approach

A very common question that newcomers are asking this month is how to find a job. It’s a very general question that tells me that many people don’t know where to begin in their job search.

It is normal to feel this way at the beginning stage of any new challenge, but confusion and frustration are not helpful. So, let clear up the confusion and set a course for success.

The most common way to look for a job is to apply on advertised positions. These career opportunities are available on job search websites and recruiters. Different levels of job openings from many different fields are posted on these websites, offering a lot to choose from.

The most effective way to find a job is through your network. A network is the group of people you know, and it’s valuable for a lot of reasons. Here are a few reasons why networking is the best way to find hidden job opportunities.

1.     If you know 10 people, and they each know 10 people, you have access to 100 people. In reality, we each know more than 10 people, and they each know more than 10 people. And with good quality connections it’s even possible to access other layers of connections. Directly (through people we know) or indirectly (through other people’s connections) we have access to a LOT of people.

2.     Approximately 80% of jobs are not advertised. If you want access to this hidden job market, you need to know people who know people.

3.     Hiring a new employee is a difficult process for employers. They prefer to hire by referral because it makes the process much easier.

You could find a job by applying on advertised positions. It’s good for this to be a part of your job search strategy. The other part of your strategy should be growing your network.

The bigger, deeper and more diverse your network is, the more opportunities you have access to when you need them.
